Bellingham's Exterior Challenges Are Real

Bellingham sits close enough to the Salish Sea that homes here take on a different kind of weathering than you'd see further inland. Salt-laden air moves in off the water, driving rain rolls through for months at a stretch, and the shaded, damp conditions common in Whatcom County give moss and mildew a long season to work on siding, trim, and roofing. None of that is unusual for this part of Washington — but it does mean an exterior built for a drier climate, or installed without attention to detail, tends to show its age here faster than homeowners expect.

We've watched this play out on homes across the area: paint failing early on wood trim, caulk joints opening up at seams, moss colonizing north-facing roof slopes and shaded siding runs, and moisture finding its way behind panels that weren't flashed correctly the first time. It's rarely one dramatic failure — it's a slow accumulation of small vulnerabilities that eventually add up to a repaint, a re-side, or a repair bill.

Why We Only Install James Hardie Siding

Siding is your home's first and most constant line of defense against everything Bellingham's climate throws at it. That's why we made a deliberate decision as a company: we install James Hardie fiber cement siding, and nothing else. Not vinyl, not LP SmartSide, not cedar, not primed spruce.

Each of those products has legitimate uses and reasonable people choose them. But for a climate with this much sustained moisture exposure, we found the trade-offs weren't ones we wanted to put our name behind:

  • Wood and engineered wood siding need consistent paint maintenance and are vulnerable at cut edges and fastener points if moisture gets in — a real risk given how much rain this area sees.
  • Vinyl siding can warp or become brittle over time, and its seams and panel joints give water a path if installation isn't precise.
  • Fiber cement, by contrast, is non-combustible, dimensionally stable, and doesn't feed mold or rot the way wood-based products can.

James Hardie's ColorPlus factory-applied finish also matters here — a baked-on finish holds up to UV and moisture better than field-applied paint, which means fewer repaint cycles over the life of the siding. Hardie also engineers specific product lines (their HZ5 line, for example) for regions with more moisture exposure, which is part of why we standardized on this brand rather than a generic fiber cement alternative.

What a Full Exterior Approach Looks Like

Siding doesn't work in isolation — it's one part of a system that has to shed water correctly, and we treat it that way. Beyond siding, we handle roofing, windows, and decks, because a weak point in any one of those areas can undermine the others. A roof with failing flashing can send water down behind otherwise sound siding. Windows with degraded seals let moisture into wall cavities. A deck attached to the house without proper ledger flashing is one of the more common sources of hidden rot we find during inspections in this region.

When we look at a Bellingham home, we're checking how the roofline, siding, window openings, and any attached decking work together — not just quoting one product in isolation. That's especially relevant on homes with more shaded exposures or mature landscaping nearby, where moss and moisture tend to concentrate.

Moss, Moisture, and Maintenance in Whatcom County

Moss isn't just cosmetic. On roofing, it holds moisture against shingles and can lift edges over time. On siding, it signals a spot that stays damp longer than it should — often a north-facing wall, an area shaded by trees, or a section with poor drainage at the base. Part of doing this work right in Whatcom County means understanding which parts of a house are naturally more exposed to that kind of buildup, and detailing the installation — proper starter strips, flashing, and clearances — so those areas drain and dry the way they're supposed to.

Fiber cement doesn't stop moss from growing on a surface, but it does mean the material underneath isn't degrading the way wood can when moss holds moisture against it for months at a time.

Why a Local Crew Matters

Bellingham's building conditions aren't identical to a subdivision fifty miles inland, and there's real value in working with a crew that installs in this climate regularly rather than occasionally. We know how James Hardie's HZ5 product line behaves in a marine environment, how to flash and detail an installation for sustained rain rather than occasional showers, and where on a typical Bellingham or broader Whatcom County home moisture tends to accumulate. That familiarity shows up in the details — the flashing choices, the fastening patterns, the gaps and clearances — that separate an installation that holds up for decades from one that starts causing problems in year five.

We're not going to tell you every other siding product is a bad choice. We are going to tell you why, after years of doing exterior work in this region, we chose to stand behind one product and install it correctly every time, rather than offer a menu of options with varying long-term performance.
